Dr. Hilary Ginter, Obstetrics and Gynecology was a natural choice in med school. Her undergraduate training was in Psycho Biology, the study of the biology of the brain, and, despite being fascinated by science, she realized quickly that her calling was in helping people, not research; that put her down the path to becoming an MD, not a PhD.

After completing her under graduate training at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, she took a couple of years off before starting medical school and spent that time working at a Women’s Health Clinic, providing contraceptive and women’s health education. “That’s really where my interest started. I was a young woman myself and had spent the last years at a women’s college, and was spending time learning about and then educating women about their bodies and their reproductive health. Learning about what our bodies can do was fascinating.”

In medical school, Dr. Ginter thought that OB/GYN might be her preferred specialty, but also toyed with the idea of surgery because of the challenge. Ultimately, she chose OB/GYN because it combined her interest in women’s health and her desire to work on complex surgical cases. “It is the best of both worlds. I can focus on women’s health issues, deliver babies and perform big, complicated surgeries.”

Prior to coming to Calvert, Dr. Ginter worked in a local community hospital as an OB/GYN in western Maryland. When her husband started working in Annapolis, Calvert became her location of choice to practice medicine. “A community hospital setting is all I have known for my entire career, and it’s what I love. I didn’t want to live or work in a big city, and Calvert felt like home.”

One of the things she likes most about working in OB/GYN and in Calvert is the diversity of the patient population and patient situations. “I love walking into the office and not knowing what or who I’m going to see. A great day for me is seeing a few women’s health patients in the morning, delivering a baby over lunch and doing a surgery in the afternoon. As an OB/GYN, I get to work with young women just beginning to understand their bodies, adult women in the process of creating their own families, and older women who are adjusting to their lives after menopause. You can’t get more diverse than that!”
